Oscar Peterson Trio

I’m Old Fashioned

A few weeks ago I was asked by John Yun, my associate conductor from the “Charlie and the Chocolate factory” first National tour of the Broadway musically play drums for a transcription he worked on! A chance to play an Oscar Peterson arrangement? Are you kidding me? I’d love to! I’d be honored to play this! So it took me a day or two to listen to it a bunch on the subway and play through. By the end of the first day, I had the audio but I couldn’t get the audio and video to record plus play the track of John Yun ( piano) and David White ( bass) to play while I played along to it. So I recorded drums with a zoom recorder! I did some magic and logic and it came out pretty well! However, I did not have the video of me playing to match. So a few days later, David White came over and set up the rehearsal space so it became like a video studio! We set up an overhead mic and a mic on the bass drum. That’s it! The rest is magic! Enjoy this really fun arrangement of I’m Old Fashioned by Oscar Peterson!

5/4 Afro Cuban Groove

This is the groove I used as the basis to write the tune Bli- Fi short for Blues in Five! I’ve always loved the Afro Cuban 6/8 groove! So I decided to play that in 5 and what came next was I came up with the bass line!

Also around this time when I wrote this song, McCoy Tyner, the great jazz pianist who played in the John Coltrane Quartet, passed away. The song Bli-Fi is dedicated to the prolific work and contribution to music by the Real McCoy! This video is just the groove and was part of an interview I gave for Michelle Marie.
